Marimekko and Origin by Ocean, two Finnish companies, have teamed together in a pilot project to rethink a more environmentally friendly textile printing method. The research intends to replace synthetic chemicals and lower the amount of chemicals used in Marimekko’s printing process.
A Finnish technology and material innovation business called Origin by Ocean is developing goods using algae as a base. Using a revolutionary biorefining method, Origin by Ocean turns captured harmful algae and sustainably farmed seaweed into bio-based compounds.
In the pilot, the business replaced a synthetic thickener in the print paste with Origin by Ocean’s algae-based thickener. According to a press statement from the company, Origin by Ocean Caerulo alginate, a print paste thickener created from marine biomass from the Dominican Republic, was used to print several textile products.
Thickeners, which make up the majority of the paste, are essential to the textile printing process. The goal of lowering the number of chemicals used in the supply chain is helped by testing the usage of bio-based thickeners in the printing process.
