BERLIN: Online apparel retailer Zalando has introduced a private label line that was developed by its in-house Zign Studio and mostly uses recyclable and renewable materials.
The Zign Studio line was created utilizing a fashion design “atelier” technique; it is essentially a condensed capsule collection that is focused on a single, overarching creative idea, in this case, sustainability.
The collection’s designers focused on a blend of premium materials and circular design, offering 41 women’s and 39 men’s clothing styles in the textiles, footwear, and accessories sectors. The fabrics utilized include those made of recycled fishnet nylon, biobased faux leather created from coffee grounds, and leather made from mushrooms, as well as fabrics made of renewable wood pulp and other materials. Additionally, repurposed pigments and dyes are included in the collection.
Vice President for private label, sustainability, and diversity and inclusion products Sara Diez said: “Our private labels are an incubator of new ideas: they are our testing ground for innovative solutions in fashion, especially in the areas of sustainability, circularity, diversity, and inclusion.”
The Circular creation Criteria from the German technology company Circular were also used in the creation of a sizable portion of the collection. Fashion uses a mono-material method, in which at least 95% of a single material is used to create clothing.
As a result, the clothing is made to either biodegrade or be recycled and converted into new materials, fitting into either the biological or technical cycle.
The line mixes fashionable designs with functionality for everyday use, cutting-edge materials, modularity, and a circular design philosophy.
