For a clothes drive, Uber collaborates with the Australian Red Cross

Uber and the Australian Red Cross have teamed up to organize a convenient and cost-free pre-loved clothing collecting drive scheduled for Saturday, October 21. Through a scheduled Uber delivery, this project enables Australians to give up to 20 kg of unwanted clothing to the Australian Red Cross. The program, which is expected to collect over 60,000 kilograms of used clothing, will take place in key cities across the nation, including Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. The 2023 Clothing Drive is a continuation of a similar initiative that was started in 2022 and resulted in the donation of 42,000 kg of used clothing.

The partnership is a response to the conclusions of a recent “Cost of Giving” study that Uber and the Australian Red Cross commissioned. According to the survey, Australians own apparel valued at an estimated $18.5 billion in US dollars that might be donated to charitable organizations.

According to the survey, Gen Z adults have an average of US$681 in unwanted apparel, followed by Millennials with an average of US$1,171, Gen X with an average of US$1,083, and Boomers with an average of US$809. Even though 64% of Australians say they ‘ spring clean’ their wardrobes every year, 82% of those who do give leave their unwanted clothes in donation bags for up to three months. Surprisingly, 13% of respondents said they had never given clothing to a charity.

The Australian Red Cross’s head of retail, Richard Wood, stressed the variety of ways that people can help those in need, urging donations of good clothing, purchasing at Australian Red Cross locations, or volunteering. Wood emphasized the crucial part that these programs play in bringing together people and communities, particularly in trying times.

In light of the regular natural catastrophes, Dom Taylor, general manager of Uber ANZ, emphasized the significance of supporting vulnerable communities. Without having to make financial contributions, Taylor emphasized that Australians can still have a significant impact on these communities.

The Uber and Australian Red Cross Clothing Drive streamlines the pre-owned clothing donation process by providing free pickups from donors’ doorsteps to Australian Red Cross sorting centers on the designated day, ensuring support for vulnerable communities beyond monetary contributions.
