According to a recent report released by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), there are now 1,300 instances of violence and abuse every day in the UK against retail workers. According to the organization’s analysis, this amounted to a 50% increase in the incidence of retail violence for the years 2022–2023.
Furthermore, throughout that same period, the documented expense of theft increased to £ 1.8 billion, or 45,000 cases every day. This indicates a rise in the overall cost of crime to £ 3.3 billion. This is true even though retailers are said to have spent £ 1.2 billion on security guards, CCTV, and body-worn cameras as part of increased efforts to deter crime.
The region’s dissatisfaction with the police increased as a result, with 60% of research participants in the BRC stating that the force handled problems in a “poor” or “very poor” manner.
The CEO of the BRC, Helen Dickinson, stated in a release that “violence and abuse against retail workers is climbing despite retailers investing huge sums in crime prevention.” The government can no longer overlook the predicament of common, diligent retail coworkers, with over 1,300 occurrences occurring daily.
