The 2023 Advanced Recycling Conference in Germany will examine LCA and policy

On November 28 and 29, 2023, the Advanced Recycling Conference will be held online and in Cologne, Germany. This year’s conference, which follows a successful debut in 2022, intends to cover the full spectrum of modern recycling technologies, including pyrolysis, gasification, and extrusion and dissolution. The symposium will also cover related topics like legislation, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and mass balance recycling methods.

Recycling is crucial now more than ever as the world struggles with the climate catastrophe. Currently, fossil feedstocks including oil, coal, and natural gas account for about 88 percent of embedded carbon. Modern recycling techniques provide a way to lessen this dependence. Given that the predicted yearly need for 1.15 gigatonnes of carbon by 2050 would need to be entirely satisfied through renewable sources, the conference will offer numerous cutting-edge methods to maintain and reuse embedded carbon in the technological realm, according to a news statement from nova-Institut GmbH.

Under its Green Deal plan, the European Union is imposing strict recycled content standards on a variety of goods, including packaging, textiles, and automobiles. By 2040, a recently discovered initiative seeks to employ 10 times as much recycled material in the packaging industry. Companies must keep up with the most recent developments in recycling technology to meet these standards while maintaining high-quality and profitable goods.

Academics, policymakers, and industry experts will all contribute to the conference’s worldwide agenda. They will deal with problematic waste streams, including textiles and containers made of mixed plastics. For those working in the recycling industry or trying to advance the use of renewable carbon, the event seems to be a significant platform.

From 10:00 through 17:40 CET on the first day of the conference, specialists will concentrate on the strategy, markets, and policy around the circular economy of plastics. The conference will begin with a presentation by Michael Carus of the nova-Institute on the value of advanced recycling in the green carbon economy. He will be followed by talks from other specialists including Lars Krause, Lara Dammer, Luis Hoffmann, and Dimitri Daniels.

Experts like Carlos Monreal, David Sudolsky, Oliver Borek, Christian Haupts, and Valentijn de Neve will discuss the benefits of pyrolysis in the mechanical recycling section. They will talk about the coordinated efforts required to enhance plastics’ circular economy.

Speakers in the Dissolution part, including Abidin Balan, Matthias Wilhelm, Florian Riedl, and Panzheng Zhou, will discuss polymer extraction methods.

The day will also feature a parallel session with experts including Klaus Lederer, Belen Monje, Frank Eisentrager, and Lars Biermann on the adaptability of extruders and sophisticated mechanical recycling. They will explore cutting-edge methods for processing input streams as well as reactive extrusion’s potential for recycling.
