‘Save the Planet’ citizens’ initiative is registered by the European Commission

“Save the Planet by Shifting Taxation from Labour to Greenhouse Gas Emissions” is the title of a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) that the European Commission has formally registered. This action is a big step toward using creative economic strategies to combat climate change.
The initiative’s organizers implore the commission to improve the EU carbon pricing scheme and the Fit for 55 Package. To achieve emission reduction targets, key suggestions include an unlimited carbon price and a quicker phase-out of free allowances. They also support boosting the EU’s Social Climate Fund by giving low-income people a sizeable share of the proceeds from carbon pricing.

According to a news release from the commission, the proposal also advocates for the establishment of a “Climate Club,” in which member nations enact strict carbon pricing policies with an emphasis on allocating proceeds to assist low-income people. The commission’s decision to register the initiative is solely legal; it says nothing about the commission’s ultimate opinion on the recommendations or what steps it could take should the initiative receive enough support. The initiative’s legal admissibility is confirmed by the registration, which attests to its compliance with the official requirements outlined in the pertinent legislation. The commission hasn’t yet examined the proposals’ actual content, though.

The organizers have six months from the time of registration to start gathering signatures. The commission will be required to respond if the initiative receives one million statements of support in less than a year, with a minimum of figures attained in at least seven different member states. Subsequently, the commission will determine whether or not to act on the request and will have to provide a justification for its decision.

If this plan is successful, it may result in a substantial shift in the EU’s approach to pricing carbon and taking climate action; labor costs may be replaced by greenhouse gas emissions, and those most impacted by these changes may receive financial assistance. The plan seeks to establish a more just and efficient mechanism for cutting emissions and halting global warming.
