“Premium yarn” created from spider silk and Pima cotton is unveiled by Kraig Biocraft

Kraig Biocraft, a biotech business, has introduced its first high-end yarn that blends Pima Cotton and its recombinant spider silk.

Kraig Biocraft’s yarn aims to increase value-added vertical integration in the apparel and textile industries. It is intended to create a 100% natural fiber composite yarn for use in textiles and completed clothing by combining the finest grade cotton with spider silk.

Working with Jeff Dorton, the company’s textile expert, the company investigated several potential spinners before selecting one. The decision was finally made by the spinner based on their manufacturing capacity and technological capabilities.

CEO and founder Kim Thompson stated, “This is just the first of many new materials we have planned that incorporate our revolutionary spider silk.”

The company developed its first blend of cotton and spider silk to cater to customers in markets like upmarket dresswear and clothing. Kraig Biocraft is trying to create more mixes of natural fiber and spider silk to cater to various formal wear subsegments.

The new facility will enhance Kraig Biocraft’s production capacity and serve as a focus for collaboration with the Vietnam Sericulture Association (VSA) and the Lam Dong Agro-Forestry Research and Experiment Centre (LAREC) with the aim of enhancing sericulture practices in Vietnam.
