For a two-day summit on textile circularity, Goodwill Industries International (GII) and its affiliated organizations from the US, Canada, and Finland gathered in Rochester, New York. Researchers from the Rochester Institute of Technology were among the attendees, as well as representatives from the textile recycling industries including Tomra, Sortile, and Accelerating Circularity.
Counting cutting-edge methods in textile sorting and grading, circularity landscape modeling, garment deconstruction, and the newest recycling machinery and equipment were among the subjects discussed by attendees at the summit related to textile circularity. Standout exhibits showcased advancements inside the Goodwill network, as regional groups shared results from advanced recycling trials. The goal of these pilots, which are part of a Walmart Foundation-funded textile recycling program, is to turn donations of items that are no longer usable into raw materials for recycling.
“Emphasizing Goodwill’s pledge to develop textile circularity, highlighting the significance of maximizing value from every donated piece for the planet, groups, and people,” said Steve President, CEO of GII.
“By emphasizing reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling of goods, we are creating several avenues to reduce waste and increase value, supported by the Walmart Foundation and partners across numerous sectors of the textile circularity environment.”
Goodwill of the Finger Lakes President and CEO Jennifer Lake emphasized the organization’s leadership in reuse, particularly as recycling technology develops in the US.
The proceeds from the sale of donated items go toward funding essential community programs, such as job placement and training for those who are having difficulty finding work. Through its activities, Goodwill ensures that the value of donated goods stays in the community, supporting important programs and services.
Goodwill is to hold its inaugural environmental Summit in August in Washington, DC, with the goal of inspiring more industry leaders to work together and take action on environmental issues.
