Spotlight on Annual Stakeholders Conference 2023:Transforming Pakistan’s Textile Landscape through Knowtex

The Annual Stakeholders Conference 2023 was hosted at the esteemed National Textile University in Faisalabad under the prestigious banner of Knowtex, a revolutionary Grand Challenge Project in Pakistan to enhance Pakistan’s textile exporters’ ability to compete internationally based on scientific knowledge. The use of high-value indigenous resources, skilled labor, product diversity, and the creation of luxury textiles should indubitably result in a textile industry that is competitive on a worldwide scale.

The Annual Stakeholder Conference 2023 of Knowtex brought together industrial collaborators and academic teams on August 16th to evaluate project advancements, deliberate on development trajectories, and chart a future course with operational teams. This pivotal gathering aimed at fostering a robust knowledge-sharing mechanism.

The conference garnered participation from 23 faculty members representing 3 diverse universities and 22 industrial collaborators hailing from 17 industries. Extensive discussions revolved around progress assessment and the preparedness of various initiatives, coupled with valuable feedback that harmonized research efforts with forthcoming industry demands.

Academia showed their presence from NED Karachi and BUITEMS Quetta. Industrial Collaborators participated from Itextiles, Sapphire Textile Mills, Crescent Textile Mills, Interloop, USDenim, Crescent Bahuman Ltd, Artistic Milliners, Lucky Core Industries, Master Textiles, Nizam Sons, Mahmood Group, Arshad Group, Naveena Denim.

 

Knowtex Ambitious Endeavors: Forging New Frontiers

The revolutionary projects that Knowtex is working on to transform the textile industry are at the core of its mission:

Work Package 1: Delving into the realm of high-value indigenous natural fibers, Knowtex explores sustainable materials that can redefine the industry’s environmental impact. The accomplishments of WP-1 were discussed in great depth by Dr. Faheem Ahmad. He showed out the newly developed fabrics made of cotton and banana denim, cotton and sisal, cotton and jute thread, and spinnable flax fibers. He also discussed the development of blended yarn produced from cotton and bananas by Interloop Limited. Two patent applications discussed the creation of banana/cotton and sisal/cotton yarn.

Work Package 2: Unveiling the potential of Pakistani wool, this package focuses on crafting value-added textiles that resonate with both quality and innovation. Dr. Mohammad Kashif of BUITEMs discussed the use of Pakistani wool in the production of non-woven yarn.  The attendees all discussed increasing consumer awareness, future market demands, and a cost study of wool fiber. Creative milliners were drawn to Pakistani wool yarn. There will be comments on wool fibers from other sectors as well.

Work Package 3: Upgrading indigenous power looms showcases Knowtex’s dedication to modernizing traditional techniques for improved efficiency and output. Dr. Muhammad Ayub Asghar presented the status of wp-3. The Shaheen Power Loom device, developed as part of this research by the NTU and Saeed Manufacturing Industries, was on show during his talk. A patent application for “A Method of Manufacturing a 3D Woven Reinforced Rapier Tape” was submitted along with the creation of a lightweight composite sley.

Work Package 4: By pivoting towards manmade fibers-based textiles, Knowtex underscores its commitment to exploring diverse materials for futuristic textile applications. The industrialists were informed by Dr. Salma that a cost comparison of sportswear created by humans had been conducted and might be used to inform future products.

Work Package 5: Knowtex’s pursuit of novel and high-end textile value chains signals a strategic move towards higher-value products. Dr. Munir Ashraf spoke about functional textiles like EMI Shield, post-consumer waste recycling, cut-resistant workwear, puncture-resistant gloves, and bioactive antibacterial fabric. Dr. Usman Zubair discussed the comparison of acid/random washing and aero-ozone technology for denim washing as well as the comparative study of denim pumice stone washing and sander washing technology to promote sustainability.

Work Package 6: Capacity building through Scientific Methods of Training (SMOT) underscores Knowtex’s emphasis on equipping the industry with skill sets aligned with scientific rigor. Dr. Babar Ramzan presented the overall achievements of WP-6. He presented the baseline study of training manuals for trainers and supervisors.

Work Package 7: Navigating market dynamics through meticulous research, branding, and effective marketing strategies is pivotal for Knowtex’s broader goals. Dr. Muhammad Shehzad Iqbal gave a presentation on the Wp-7 development’s progress. He discussed the area of denim’s competitiveness and appropriateness for export.

Work Package 8: Dissemination and implementation serve as the backbone of Knowtex’s vision, ensuring that innovations effectively permeate the industry landscape. All of the participants praised the efforts done by Wp-8 members to organize this kind of event and unite academia and industry.

Dr. Muzzamal declared There will be the inaugural National Conference of Textile Waste Recyclers on September 20, 2023. Numerous discussions on Net Zero, circularity, and the future regulatory environment will be held over the following few days. The third international conference on knowledge-based textiles will be held on March 5 and 6, 2024.

Amidst this synergy of knowledge, experience, and ambition, the conference served as a beacon of hope for transforming Pakistan’s textile narrative. As Knowtex continues to bridge the gap between academia, industry, and innovation, the conference stands as a resounding testament to the nation’s pursuit of excellence and global recognition in the textile domain.

Moreover, the conference provided a comprehensive journey from technology development to technology transfer, showcasing the entire spectrum of progress. From laying the groundwork to meticulously analyzing outcomes and projecting future trajectories, the event facilitated insightful discussions.
