The AATCC will hold a symposium in the United States to discuss PFAS in textiles

On July 11-12, 2023, industry leaders will convene in Durham, North Carolina for the ‘Navigating a Path Forward for PFAS in Textiles’ conference. The symposium, organized by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC), will foster debate and the development of effective techniques for measuring, controlling, replacing, and eradicating per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in textiles.

PFAS is a broad set of man-made compounds that have received a lot of attention in recent years. The unusual molecular structure of PFAS, which consists of carbon and fluorine atoms, contributes to their extraordinary resistance to heat, water, and oil. According to the AATCC, these qualities have led to their extensive usage in a variety of industrial and consumer textile applications.

Because of its desirable practical properties, PFAS-treated fabrics such as waterproof jackets and stain-resistant carpets have grown in popularity. Concerns have been raised, however, about the possible negative effects of PFAS on human health and the environment.

To chart a course for PFAS in textiles, stakeholders such as researchers, industry experts, legislators, and consumer advocacy organizations must work together. It entails identifying possible hazards, investigating feasible alternatives, and putting in place effective rules and laws.

By tackling the PFAS concerns jointly, stakeholders may aim for a more sustainable and responsible approach to textile manufacturing while protecting human health and the environment.

The conference is accepting early registration through June 27, 2023.
