The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has adopted Levi Strauss net zero targets for 2050. According to LS&Co.’s chief sustainability officer Jeffrey Hogue, the official approval by SBTi establishes a clear benchmark for all of Levi Strauss’s initiatives.
“Therefore, we are aligning our supply chain emissions reduction pathways to be consistent with limiting temperature rise to no more than 1.5C in order to ensure our net zero goal complies with SBTi requirements.” We are announcing a new absolute emissions reduction target of 42% by 2030 and revising our near-term Scope 3 goal base year from 2016 to 2022 in accordance with SBTi guidelines, he added.
Thanks to the new baseline and improvements in data collection and modeling over the past ten years, Levi Strauss is better able to reflect its operations and the effects of climate change by incorporating land- and agriculturally-based emissions into its calculations.
LS&Co. is now aiming for a 42% absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030, starting from 2022 as the baseline year, as opposed to its previous goal of 40% reduction by 2025.
Using its ties to Fashion for Good and other industry collaborative efforts, Levi Stauss also hopes to accelerate the shift to more sustainable materials and renewable energy sources, create scale and speed within the industry, and lower emissions in the weaving, spinning, and dyeing processes.
