China releases instructions to boost green transformation efforts

China has published new rules to expedite efforts to realize the nation’s predetermined low-carbon, green development goals through the green transformation of enterprises, services, and other social activities.

According to recommendations released by the State Council and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, significant progress in China’s green transition will be made by 2030 in critical areas of the country’s social and economic sectors.

According to state-run media, China will have a mostly green, low-carbon, and circular economy by 2035, with social and economic development fully following the sustainable and green route.

According to the recommendations, China’s energy-saving and environmental protection sector is expected to grow to a size of 15 trillion yuan ($2.1 trillion) by 2030, when non-fossil fuels are expected to account for at least 25% of the nation’s overall energy mix.

The policy establishes the framework for a number of green development initiatives in China, such as the nation’s dedication to green growth, extensive use of green production techniques, thorough industrial system reorganization, and widespread acceptance of eco-friendly lifestyles by the populace.

Recently, the cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou quickened the speed of their green transition by substituting clean electric vehicles for their dirty internal combustion engine-powered counterparts. Cities in tiers two and three are starting to do the same.

By the end of 2027, Shanghai intends to phase out all city-street buses and taxis in favor of electric vehicles (EVs), which would replace 6,200 buses and 11,000 taxis. Meanwhile, Beijing has developed a plan to increase the quantity of new-energy buses, trucks, and cars to at least 2 million by the same year.

China is leading the way in this transition and its EV market is booming at a rate never seen before.

The energy consumption and carbon emissions per GDP unit fell by almost 26% and 35%, respectively, between 2012 and 2023, which helped to improve the visual quality of the environment, as evidenced by the bluer skies, greener mountains, and clearer lakes.
