The Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) recently requested that conditions be put in place to increase exports of leather and leather goods from their current level of $1.7 billion to $5 billion by 2027. The meeting was presided over by the PM’s principal secretary M. Tofazzel Hossain Miah.
The directive was issued in response to a meeting on bringing Savar’s tanneries, central effluent treatment plant (CETP), and solid waste management up to the standards of the Leather Working Group (LWG), a community of international stakeholders dedicated to constructing a sustainable future with ethical leather, Bangladeshi media outlets reported.
Hossain emphasized that upgrading the CETP at Savar Tannery Estate is very important for global compliance. According to him, both the public and private sectors play a significant part in establishing this atmosphere.
The meeting was attended by the head of Bangladesh Small Cottage and Industries (BSCIC), tannery owners, and producers of leather items.
