The Armani Group undertakes a regenerative cotton initiative in Italy

The Armani Group has unveiled a new project with the Fashion Task Force of the Sustainable Markets Initiative and the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance. The Apulia regenerative cotton project will advance agroforestry-based cotton production, opening the way for Italy’s more sustainable and innovative fashion industry.

According to a joint press release from the European Forest Institute (EFI), the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics of Italy (CREA), and Pretaterra, the goal of this pilot project is to develop an experimental agroforestry regenerative cotton site among the first of its kind, to test and scientifically assess new ways to implement sustainable cotton production in Italy. The Puglia area of Italy was chosen for this project because of its warm temperature and diversified agricultural possibilities. Cotton cultivation, practiced in this region since the 12th century, is being restored as part of this programme. The project began in May and will eventually span five hectares by 2024.

This land will serve as a unique experimental field in Europe for the next five years, studying the possibilities of agroforestry cotton utilizing diverse tree species and regenerative practices. Regular scientific reports will analyse the environmental consequences, cotton characteristics, and production levels throughout the many plots that have been developed.

The programme is consistent with the Armani Group’s more significant commitment to sustainable and responsible development as outlined in its ‘People, Planet, Prosperity policy.

The role of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) elements in the group’s activities is emphasized in this approach.

The Apulia Regenerative Cotton Project is part of the Regenerative Fashion Manifesto, created in collaboration with the CBA by the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Fashion Task Force. This programme demonstrates a commitment to transitioning to a circular biobased sector that supports and contributes to the prosperity of local communities while also building and preserving regenerative landscapes.

“We are committed to driving positive change through the Sustainable Markets Initiative.” It is a daring and unique endeavor that is significant to me and my organization. Participating actively in developing agroforestry regenerative cotton, particularly on Italian soil, is an important step that will genuinely influence local populations. “Regenerative fashion, once a utopia, is finally taking shape,” stated Giorgio Armani.
