American Biomaterials startup Gozen has been able to raise US $3.3 million for its ground-breaking biomaterial called “Lunaform.” With participation from Accelr8, Astor Management, and SOSV, this fundraising round, led by Happiness Capital, represents a turning point in Gozen’s quest to transform the automotive, home furnishings, and fashion industries with its lab-grown leather substitute that is free of plastic and doesn’t come from animals.
One notable vegan biomaterial is “Lunaform,” which is made using a special fermentation method that involves microorganisms. In partnership with Balenciaga, this cutting-edge material was just unveiled at the esteemed Paris Fashion Week. It was featured in the fashion house’s spring/summer 2024 collection, most famously as a maxi bathrobe coat. The unique, fully formed structure of Lunaform sets it different from conventional composite plant-based leathers and gives it remarkable tensile strength and inherent flexibility.
One of “Lunaform’s” main benefits is that its production process only takes ten days to finish, negating the need for tanning and reducing the product’s environmental impact. Furthermore, the production process completely eschews synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These qualities are a wonderful fit for the expanding demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives around the world.
In addition, one of Gozen’s strategic goals is to build a state-of-the-art plant in Turkey. By achieving an amazing yearly production capacity of more than one million square feet, this plant will further demonstrate Gozen’s dedication to satisfying the market’s growing demand for Lunaform.
Ece Gozen, the company’s founder and CEO, said in a statement, “At Gozen, we produce advanced biomaterials with the potential to unlock circular design,” in response to the funding success. We’ve demonstrated with this investment that we can realize that potential on a large scale.
